Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 what iFixit reveals about repair

iFixit's teardown published on October 6, 2026 offers a useful answer for owners who want to keep their Apple Watch: component replacement remains possible, but access and repair resources are still difficult. An improved internal part does not make the whole repair straightforward.

The assessment covers Series 12 and Ultra 4. The scorecard specifically identifies the 46 mm Series 12; its findings should not be assumed to apply to every case size or older generation.

What changed inside Series 12

iFixit found stretch-release battery adhesive and a simpler display connection. Access still starts through the display. According to the teardown, replacing that display now also involves removing and replacing the battery.

For an owner, a display quote should therefore explain any associated work. Do not compare estimates by the headline part alone. Ask what is included, how operation will be checked, and what risks the job presents.

Ultra 4 still has a difficult entry path

The rear screws on Ultra 4 do not provide direct battery access. iFixit says they lead to the sensor assembly; battery service still starts through the display.

A case that looks easy to unscrew can conceal a different service route. Do not remove the rear screws to investigate reduced battery life. Exterior appearance does not explain how the watch should be serviced.

What a repairability score actually means

iFixit gives both models 4 out of 10. Its scorecards highlight tight seams, adhesive, and the lack of official parts and instructions available for independent repair.

That rating is not a repair success rate, an overall product-quality grade, or an estimate of lifespan. It does not mean four in ten repairs succeed. It helps compare access barriers and available resources within the evaluator's methodology.

The teardown and scorecards remained available when checked on October 12, 2026. They do not confirm local replacement-part stock in Mexico or which jobs a particular workshop can perform.

Repair or replace

Begin with an identified fault

Before approving an opening procedure, explain what changed: runtime, display behavior, charging, or operation after an impact. Short battery life and failure to receive power require different evaluations. A teardown does not diagnose your individual watch.

If the watch still meets your needs and the fault is limited, request an estimate. Consider the complete cost, the condition of the remaining components, time without the device, and service terms.

Ask about parts and scope

Confirm that the replacement part matches the exact case and variant. Ask the estimate to specify associated work and what happens if hidden damage is found. A teardown video alone does not establish that a local repair is feasible.

An evaluation may support keeping the watch, repairing it, or replacing it. The useful starting point is a verified cause and a defined scope before spending money.

Discuss water resistance separately

Apple warns that water resistance is not permanent and can decline over time. Its guidance also cautions against impacts and exposure to soap or substances that can affect seals.

After service, do not assume the watch retains its original protection for swimming or diving. Ask what checks are possible and what they cannot establish. A blanket waterproofing promise is not a substitute for a technical explanation.

Conclusion

Series 12 introduces internal improvements, while Ultra 4 retains a demanding access path. Repairability depends on design, parts, documentation, and execution. To extend the life of your watch, identify the fault first and compare a complete repair proposal with replacement.
