Apple has officially released iOS 26, featuring a new Liquid Glass design, improvements in native apps, and major security and accessibility updates. But not all iPhones are invited to the party: several older models will no longer be supported. What does this mean for users, and how should you decide your next step?

iOS 26: key features

  • Liquid Glass visual redesign with translucent elements and soft edges.

  • Upgrades to Messages, Photos, Phone, and CarPlay.

  • New accessibility tools.

  • Stronger security and performance optimization.

Apple also skipped the expected “iOS 19” name to align version numbers with the year, jumping straight to 26.

Compatible iPhones

All models with A13 Bionic or newer chips can install iOS 26:

  • iPhone 11 and later (including Pro, Pro Max, mini).

  • iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd gen).

  • iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 (including Air and Pro).

Unsupported iPhones

Apple confirmed that iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max won’t get iOS 26, along with older devices such as the iPhone 8, 7, X, and 1st-gen SE. While they’ll still function, they’ll miss out on:

  • Critical security patches.

  • New features like Apple Intelligence and visual redesign.

  • App compatibility over time.

Consequences and options for users

  • Security risks increase without updates.

  • Some apps may gradually stop working.

  • Devices remain usable for basics but lose modern functionality.

So, should you upgrade or keep using your current iPhone?
