After years of anticipation, WhatsApp is finally coming to the Apple Watch with a dedicated app. Still in beta, this update marks a major step for users who rely on their watch as an everyday extension of their iPhone.

A new chapter for WhatsApp on the Apple Watch

Until now, Apple Watch users could only receive notifications and send quick replies. The new beta version changes that, allowing users to access chats, send text messages, record voice notes, react to messages, and even view media directly from the watch.

Although the app doesn’t yet support voice or video calls, it offers a simplified and intuitive interface optimized for the Apple Watch screen —a solid foundation for future updates.

Compatible Apple Watch models

To use the new WhatsApp app, you’ll need watchOS 10 or later. That means the following models are supported:

  • Apple Watch Series 6 and later

  • Apple Watch SE (1st and 2nd generation)

  • Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2

Older models, such as the Series 5 and earlier, are not compatible due to hardware and system limitations. If your device is slowing down or struggling with updates, a professional check-up may help extend its life.

How to test the new app

Currently, the WhatsApp app for Apple Watch is only available via TestFlight, Apple’s beta testing platform. Selected users can join through a link provided by Meta and need an Apple Watch running watchOS 10.

Keep in mind that the app still depends on your iPhone —it must remain connected and logged in for the watch version to work.

What this means for Apple users

This integration brings greater convenience and accessibility to Apple Watch owners. It reduces reliance on the iPhone for messaging and represents another step toward full independence of wearable devices.

However, heavier app usage can affect battery performance and responsiveness. That’s why regular maintenance and diagnostic checks are key to keeping your Apple Watch running smoothly.
