iOS 26.3 opens the iPhone to third-party smartwatches and earbuds: what Apple users need to know

Apple is preparing one of its most unexpected moves in years. With iOS 26.3, the iPhone will offer deeper compatibility with smartwatches and earbuds from brands like Garmin, Samsung, and Huawei. A shift that challenges Apple’s closed ecosystem and gives users more freedom without leaving iOS.

Apple loosens its ecosystem with iOS 26.3

For years, the Apple Watch and AirPods have been the only accessories fully integrated with iPhone. iOS 26.3 changes that approach by enabling more advanced pairing with third-party devices, a feature already being tested in beta versions and expected to roll out in early 2026.

The update will also reach compatible iPads running iPadOS 26.3, extending this flexibility beyond the iPhone.

Third-party earbuds with a smarter connection experience

Standard Bluetooth earbuds have always worked with iPhone, but iOS 26.3 improves the experience. Earbuds that support Fast Pair will connect more like AirPods, showing an on-screen animation and allowing instant pairing with a single tap.

This applies to selected models such as Galaxy Buds and Huawei FreeBuds, although advanced Apple-exclusive features will remain limited to AirPods.

Garmin, Samsung, and Huawei watches: the real change

The biggest update affects smartwatches. With iOS 26.3, third-party watches will be able to display iPhone notifications, something previously reserved almost entirely for Apple Watch.

However, the integration has limits:

  • ✅ View iPhone notifications.

  • ❌ Reply to messages or calls.

  • ❌ Control iPhone camera or apps.

  • ❌ Access deep health features within iOS.

Each smartwatch will still rely on its own app for fitness and health tracking.

What this means for everyday users

This update is ideal for users who:

  • Prefer sports-focused watches like Garmin.

  • Already own non-Apple accessories.

  • Want flexibility without switching phones.

From a technical perspective, more connected devices mean higher demands on battery health, Bluetooth stability, and system performance. Keeping the iPhone in optimal condition becomes more important than ever.

Why iPhone maintenance matters more with iOS 26.3

As the central hub, the iPhone handles all connections. Battery wear, Bluetooth issues, or post-update bugs can directly affect smartwatch and earbud performance.
