Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate on September 14, 2026. The new version brings changes to Siri, search, Safari, Photos, Shortcuts, family controls, and overall responsiveness. Still, the fact that an update is available does not mean every user should install it on day one.

Before upgrading, confirm three things: your Mac is compatible, your essential apps and accessories support the new system, and you have a recent backup. A little preparation can prevent downtime and make the transition much smoother.

What’s new in macOS 27 Golden Gate?

macOS 27 expands Apple Intelligence and introduces Siri AI, a new generation of the assistant that can use personal context, answer questions about onscreen content, and take actions across apps. It also adds a dedicated Siri app that syncs conversation history through iCloud.

Siri AI began rolling out as a beta in English. Apple says support for Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese is coming in October 2026. Updating now therefore does not guarantee immediate access to every feature in every language. Availability may also vary by region and settings.

Other notable changes

  • Visual Intelligence lets you select a window or part of the screen and ask questions or take action based on its content.

  • Photos adds intelligent tools for reframing, extending images, and improving the removal of unwanted objects.

  • Safari can group tabs by topic, notify you when webpages change, and create extensions from a description.

  • Shortcuts can assemble an automation from a natural-language request.

  • Liquid Glass receives readability improvements and a slider for adjusting transparency.

  • Spotlight and Mail search are more effective, while AirDrop and network file browsing receive performance improvements.

Some capabilities depend on language, region, and hardware. Apple also notes that certain Apple Intelligence features may be subject to usage limits.

Which Macs support macOS 27?

macOS 27 Golden Gate drops support for Intel-based Macs. Apple’s official compatibility list includes:

  • MacBook Pro with M1 or later: models from 2020 onward, including later M2, M3, M4, and M5 generations.

  • MacBook Air with M1 or later: models from 2020 onward.

  • 13-inch MacBook Neo with A18 Pro.

  • 24-inch iMac with M1 or later: models from 2021 onward.

  • Mac mini with M1 or later: models from 2020 onward.

  • Mac Studio: models from 2022 onward.

  • Mac Pro from 2023.

To check your model and year, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. You can also open System Settings > General > Software Update. Apple only offers system versions that are compatible with that specific Mac.

Should you update to macOS 27 now?

For most people with a compatible Mac, current apps, and a verified backup, macOS 27 is a reasonable upgrade now. Apple recommends using the latest macOS version compatible with your computer for security, stability, and compatibility.

The decision deserves more care when a Mac is essential for work and relies on specialized software. Video and audio professionals, designers, developers, and businesses should first confirm support for their apps, plug-ins, drivers, and external devices.

Updating now makes sense if…

  • Your Mac appears on Apple’s official compatibility list.

  • Your essential applications officially support macOS 27.

  • You have a recent backup and enough time to finish the installation without rushing.

  • You do not rely on drivers, plug-ins, or peripherals that are still awaiting updates.

Consider waiting a little longer if…

  • You use the Mac for production and downtime could affect deadlines or customers.

  • The maker of a critical app or accessory has not confirmed compatibility.

  • Your workflow depends on audio interfaces, specialized printers, VPN software, security tools, or older plug-ins.

  • You do not have a complete backup, or the Mac already shows signs of instability.

Waiting does not mean ignoring updates. If you temporarily remain on macOS Tahoe 26, install any security updates Apple offers for that version and periodically review support for your essential tools.

How to prepare your Mac before upgrading

1. Confirm the exact model

In About This Mac, check the model, year, and chip. Do not rely on appearance alone: two Macs that look nearly identical may have different compatibility.

2. Create a backup

Use Time Machine with an external drive and confirm that the backup completes. If you work with important files, consider keeping a separate copy of active projects as well. iCloud syncing is useful, but it is not by itself a complete system backup that can restore the entire Mac.

3. Check apps, plug-ins, and peripherals

Visit the manufacturers’ official support pages and update your apps before changing operating systems. Pay particular attention to editing software, accounting tools, VPN and security software, printers, scanners, audio interfaces, drawing tablets, and any hardware that requires a driver.

4. Free up space and connect power

Software Update will tell you if more storage is required. Even so, leave comfortable room for the download, installation, and temporary files. On a MacBook, connect the charger and use a reliable network. Do not close the lid or interrupt the process.

5. Choose the right time

A major upgrade can require several restarts. Avoid installing it immediately before a meeting, trip, deadline, or workday. Keep your administrator password and any important app credentials or license information available.

How to install macOS 27 Golden Gate

Choose Apple menu  > System Settings > General > Software Update. If macOS 27 supports your Mac, the upgrade option will appear. Follow the instructions and allow the installation to finish, even if the screen goes black or the computer restarts several times.

If the upgrade does not appear, check your internet connection and search again. Its absence may also mean that the Mac model is not supported.

What to check after the upgrade

  • Open your essential applications and test their main functions.

  • Check printers, external drives, audio interfaces, monitors, and other accessories.

  • Update apps through the App Store or their official installers.

  • Review privacy permissions, login items, and backup settings.

  • Give Spotlight, Photos, and other services time to finish indexing.

You may notice more activity, battery use, or heat during the first few hours while macOS reorganizes files and indexes content. If issues continue after those tasks finish and you restart the Mac, inspect the computer instead of assuming the upgrade is the only cause.

Conclusion

macOS 27 Golden Gate is available now and can be a worthwhile upgrade for a compatible, properly prepared Mac. The best decision depends on more than wanting the latest features: it also depends on the tools you use, the stability your work requires, and whether you have a backup you can trust.

If you are unsure about your Mac’s condition, available storage, or workflow compatibility, iProX can help you inspect and prepare the computer before upgrading. A preventive check can reduce interruptions and help your Mac last longer.
